COMPANION ANIMALS OF THE MONTH

FEBRUARY 2007

BRODERICK-KEYLIME-DUSTY

Atlantic Animal Hospital has proudly selected the Youngman Shar Pei boys as Companion Animals of the Month for February 2007. Since this is the month of "love" we thought, what better way to promote it than to feature three of the most pampered and loved animals we know. Let us begin by introducing Broderick who is four years old and an unusual black color.  Next is Keylime, one and a half years old and apricot cream in color.  Finally, there is Dusty, a little over a year old and dark tan in color. All three boys are from the same breeder, House of Ruffles in Ohio. Since adoption, each has instantly become a special part of this family of five.  As Mrs. Youngman puts it, " We see our Pei's as living sculptures-works of art all over the house."

Mr. and Mrs. Youngman are artists. They are involved in art shows up and down the East coast of Florida. At times the trips are quite time consuming, so they decided to purchase an Chinook RV which enables the entire family to travel together. Not only does this RV have large sofas for the Pei's to lay around on during the day, but at night they turn into a king size bed. This sleeper is perfect for every last one of them to snuggle up close together and turn in for the night.  This family is truly close. They go everywhere together and Mr. and Mrs. Youngblood wouldn't have it any other way. The manner in which all the dog's get along is very comforting to the Youngman's. With the age difference between them there is always a chance of domination. However, with these three there's no doubt of the brotherly love they share. Each one of them has incredibly sweet personalities that compliment the others. As a family ritual and to keep them in great shape, the Youngman's, yes all of them, go jogging every morning. It is one of the many things that keep the human-animal bond in this family strong. Their fun and loyal dispositions and all those loveable wrinkles are enough to make anyone fall in love with them.

These adorable companions come with the need for special health care and sometimes cosmetic surgery. Both Dusty and Keylime have had the cosmetic eye surgery called "quadruple entropion repair". This entails dissection of the excess eyelid skin and reduction of the folds to prevent the eyelashes from rubbing on and irritating the corneas. Keylime has also had a mass removed from his back shoulder area which histopathology showed to be a Histiocytoma. Broderick did not need the Entropion surgery but did have a an accident all his own. While chasing and playing with his brother he broke a bone in a small place in his leg. Dr. Sukhija was able to locate it and diagnose what needed to be done. He had to wear a cast for six weeks and when it was taken off, Broderick showed his appreciation with doggie kisses.

It is with great pleasure that we are able to open our hearts to such wonderful humans and companion animals. This is what gives us joy here at Atlantic Animal Hospital. We feel privileged to help do our part in taking care of clients like the Youngman's and patients like Broderick, Keylime, and Dusty. Mr. and Mrs. Youngman not only show love and compassion to their companion animals but to us as well. They were even kind enough to donate some of their beautiful art work to display at our hospital.  The Shar Pei brothers are definitely fortunate to have the Youngman's as their human parents.  Mrs. Youngman stated, "we find them to be sweet and lovable animals who add to our lives in such a happy and entertaining way." Perfectly stated, Mrs. Youngman! Thank you for adding to our lives and allowing us share a brief part of your family's story with our extended family at Atlantic Animal Hospital.
