COMPANION ANIMAL OF THE MONTH

JULY 2007

Prince and Princess

We are honored to present Prince and Princess as the Companion Animals of the Month for July 2007.  Prince and Princess are twin Persian felines who are about 12 years old.  Their owner who wishes to remain anonymous, bought the dynamic duo from a professional Persian breeder when they were only 8 weeks old.  When they were first brought home the owner would put a small dot of magic marker on Princess's ear so that he could tell them apart. Since then Prince and Princess have settled right into their human family and have been treated like royalty ever since.

Prince is an affectionate cat who loves attention.  He can usually be found sitting on top of the couch so that he can catch peoples attention as they walk into the room.  Prince is no fool, he has discovered over the years that the couch is the perfect height to be scratched at.  Every morning Prince will wake his owner up by jumping on his chest so that he can be fed.  Prince has also be known to sneak up on people and jump into their lap for some attention.  He prefers the company of people and hates to be alone.  His favorite toy is a stuffed mouse that he carries all over the house.

Princess was named by the owners sister because she likes to sit in front of mirrors to admire and clean herself for quite some time.  She loves to be carried by her owner, but only her owner, as she gets upset if other handle her too much.  Just like Prince, Princess loves affection.  She will rub on her owner's leg and if that doesn't work she will tap his leg with her paw until he picks her up.  Her favorite game is to chase the shadow of her tail on the floor, this usually keeps her busy for 10 to 15 minutes at a time.

Beyond be senior felines, Prince and Princess were unfortunately intoxicated by some of foods on the recent recall.  The toxicity led to complicated kidney disease with severe dehydration.  The siblings came to Atlantic Animal Hospital after being referred to us by another client.  They had been to other day practices and the emergency clinic for a few days.  Dr. Sukhija had to hospitalize both until their lab work showed a plataue in their kidney enzymes.  This plataue meant that their kidneys and the bodies in general had been rid of the kidney toxins as much as possilble.  Eventually, both were sent home to the delight of their human family.  Thanks to the great homecare provided by Prince and Princess' owner, they continue to enjoy a great quailty of life.  Both cats will continue to have chronic renal failure (CRF) and will require homecare including special diets, subcutaneous fluids, and electrolyte supplements.

Prince and Princess mostly spend their day relaxing and sleeping by the front door eagerly waiting for their owner to come home.  The pet food recall has forever changed the lives of  Prince and Princess and Atlantic Animal Hospital is dedicated to make sure that these two affectionate cats remain happy for more years to come.  None of this would be possible without the excellent care provided by their human family.  This human being and these two cats show true attachment, love, and compassion for each other.  We are proud to feature this great example of the human-animal bond and veterinary-patient-client relationship this month.
